Exploring the Reno Tahoe region on a mountain bike is an exhilarating way to experience its diverse landscapes. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider seeking thrills, this area offers a range of trails that showcase alpine beauty, desert vistas, and lakeside scenery. Here’s a guide to some of the top mountain biking trails in the region.
The Tahoe Rim Trail stretches 168 miles around Lake Tahoe, offering a variety of sections tailored to different skill levels. This trail combines sandy and silty terrain with some challenging climbs and descents. The Picnic Rock Vista Ride on Lake Tahoe’s north shore is perfect for those seeking an easier route. This 3-mile round-trip trail provides scenic views of pine forests and the lake.
For a moderate ride, check out the McCloud Falls Ride. This 6.4-mile round-trip trail leads you through vibrant wildflowers and rewards you with a hidden waterfall after an uphill climb. Accessible from the west shore of Lake Tahoe, follow the Tahoe Rim Trail to the first vista point, then turn left to access the Tyrolean Downhill trail. This intermediate to advanced trail features steep descents and optional obstacles for added excitement.
The Flume Trail is one of the most renowned mountain biking routes near Lake Tahoe. Starting at Spooner Lake State Park and heading north towards Incline Village, this trail offers stunning views. Although some sections are challenging, it’s well-suited for intermediate riders. You can ride one way with a shuttle service or complete the loop back to Spooner Lake along the Tahoe Rim Trail.
In Reno-Sparks, mountain biking under the expansive skies and amid desert landscapes is relaxing and breathtaking. The Peavine Mountain area, with elevations ranging from 4,900 to 8,266 feet, features a variety of trails for all skill levels. Trailheads are accessible from the mountain’s southeast side, near northwest Reno and Rancho San Rafael Park.
For a thrilling ride, try the Halo-Crispy Bacon Loop. Park on Kings Row, climb the Halo Trail and then continue west to find the Crispy Bacon Trail. South Reno also offers excellent trails around Galena Creek. The Dry Pond Loop, located at the base of Mount Rose, provides a mix of challenging climbs and exhilarating descents through forests along Whites Creek and Thomas Creek. This 7-mile loop is popular with hikers and trail runners, so be mindful of trail etiquette.
The North Ballardini Ranch Trail, a 2-mile single track, connects the Ballardini Open Space to Galena and can be ridden in either direction with a moderate grade. Hidden Valley Regional Park, located east of Reno, features several mountain biking loops. The 3.6-mile Backcountry Loop is a rigorous climb with rewarding downhill sections. The Perimeter Loop and Highland Trail are ideal for beginners and intermediate riders who want less intense riding.
In Sparks, the Los Altos Trail Network offers challenging climbs and stunning views on trails like Zipper West Loop and Jackrabbit. The packed dirt provides a smoother ride, but be cautious of wet conditions that make the trails difficult.
With such diverse trails, Reno Tahoe is a mountain biking paradise waiting to be explored.
