For many of us, the prospect of hitting the trails involves cramming into cars, enduring frustrating traffic, and battling for a parking spot in overcrowded lots. But what if you could step out your back door and onto an epic trail? Well, one Australian YouTuber is living that very dream.
Meet Luke, better known as “Cutlaps” on YouTube, as he takes us on a tour of his backyard mountain bike trail. Now, when we say “backyard,” it’s a bit of a stretch. It’s more like a patch of woods behind his house. However, technically speaking, it occupies the land behind his rented house, making it the genuine backyard deal.
Luke’s approach to trail building is nothing short of impressive. His trail boasts various wooden features, featuring substantial gaps and meticulous craftsmanship. The adventure begins with a stump drop. Instead of digging out the stubborn stump, Luke ingeniously turned it into a drop, adding an unexpected thrill to his trail.
One of the standout features is a skinny trail segment crafted from a fallen tree that spans a stream. Luke’s resourcefulness shines here as he skillfully milled the tree into a challenging skinny trail feature.
To up the ante, Luke also had access to a mini excavator, which he used to enhance berms—a dream come true for anyone with a parcel of land. These machines don’t come cheap, but they certainly make building dirt jumps an absolute blast.
Luke’s backyard trail showcases the true spirit of mountain biking: innovation, creativity, and making the most of what’s available. It might not be a sprawling wilderness, but it’s a testament to the incredible experiences that can be crafted right in our own backyards.
