What was intended to be a leisurely mountain bike ride turned into a life-threatening situation for Jess Dureza in the hills of Menifee, California. As the late afternoon sun began to fade, Dureza found himself in a dire situation far from civilization.
With a quick ride planned before sunset, Dureza embarked on his adventure. We all know mountain biking is a sport where crashes can happen, often far from roads, homes, and cell service. Unfortunately, Dureza experienced a severe crash that left him unconscious and critically injured.
Regaining consciousness as daylight dwindled, Dureza realized the gravity of his situation. Alone and unable to seek help, he managed to find the strength to make a desperate call for assistance. In a stroke of luck, he had just enough cell service to reach out to 911 and provide them with his location.
Responding swiftly to the call, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department sprang into action. Video footage shared by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department showcased the heroic efforts of the rescue team as they hoisted Dureza into a helicopter, carefully transporting him to awaiting medical personnel on the ground.
Miraculously, Dureza not only survived the ordeal but made a remarkable recovery. His injuries were severe, but his resilience and the swift response of the rescue team played a vital role in saving his life. Grateful for the second chance he had been given, Dureza returned to duty at March Air Reserve Base, where he, his family, and fellow airmen had the opportunity to express their gratitude to the brave individuals who had come to his aid.
In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation, the 452nd Aerial Port Support Flight Unit at March Air Reserve Base presented the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department with a plaque, symbolizing their gratitude for the life-saving efforts.
Like any adventure sport, mountain biking carries its fair share of risks. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), mountain biking athletes have an injury risk rate of 0.6% per year, with an average of one injury per 1000 hours of biking. While most accidents are minor, Dureza’s story highlights the importance of preparedness, safety measures, and the support of dedicated rescue teams in mitigating the risks.
Jess Dureza’s journey serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication displayed by those who selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to rescue others. It also underscores the resilience and determination of individuals who refuse to let adversity define them. The mountain biking community stands united in celebrating Dureza’s recovery and expressing gratitude to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for their unwavering commitment to saving lives.
