Because mountain biking has progressively become a popular sport among all age groups everywhere, you can expect to be sharing the trail with co-bikers who wish to practice and have a good time on the trails too. You won’t only be sharing the road with other bikers but hikers as well.
To make sure you and the others you share the trail with have a hassle-free and smooth experience, keep these tips on trail etiquette in mind.

Make sure the trail allows the type of mountain biking you want to do.
Mountain bikes are not allowed on all trails. eMTBs are not allowed on all trails open to mountain bikes. Some trails close seasonally to protect wildlife or temporarily to repair damage. On certain days, certain trails are only open for bicycling. Others have one-way traffic only. There’s a lot to know before you go.
Don’t hold anyone up by being unprepared.
Trail safety and self-sufficiency should be your top priorities. Make sure you have the tools and know-how to fix a flat, carry enough water and snacks, and know where you’re going. Always carry a map or have a mapping app on your fully charged phone. Stay on track!
Signal clearly when passing.
Bikers and hikers who are sharing the trail with you might be too focused on their own thing that they pay little to no attention to what is happening around them. Catch their attention by clearly making signals, especially when passing by.
Yield to crossing traffic.
Pedestrians crossing the road always have the right of way. When approaching a pedestrian lane, slow down so you can easily make a full stop to let people pass if needed.
Ride in a straight line to ensure that you are predictable.
Don’t confuse other bikers and maintain a straight line while riding. This will prevent them from making surprising moves that can lead to accidents as well.
Always use lights when riding in the dark.
Not only will lights improve your visibility of the road, but they will also make you more visible on the road so other bikers can be cautious and hikers can look out for you too.
Use only half the width of the trail.
You bear the same right of the road as other bikers when it comes to the space you take up. Be respectful and occupy only what you need to give enough space for other bikers and road users too.

Keep the trail clean.
You are not only sharing the trail with those currently using it but also those who will use it in the future. Do your part and keep the trail free from accident-inducing debris and litter for the safety of future riders.
Be mindful of animals.
Give animals plenty of space, including wildlife, livestock, equestrians, and fellow trail users. As we take our dogs on trails, we must follow leash laws, leave no trace, and train them to be as respectful of other trail users as we are.
Just follow these tips in observing proper trail-sharing etiquette, and a sure good time is guaranteed to both you and your trail-sharers.
