What to Prepare When Going Mountain Biking in Arizona
Your trip to Arizona should be nothing short of perfect especially since you’ll be spending money and time just to have some MTB fun there. To get the most of your Arizona MTB escapade, make sure to consider the following beforehand:
If you’re going mountain biking in Arizona, of course, you’ll need a bike! But what kind of bike is the real question. Ideally, a hardtail cross-country bike or an enduro full-suspension bike will allow you to ride most trails in Arizona. Don’t bring a downhill bike if you’ll be riding in Phoenix as you will have to climb uphill most of the time.
This goes without saying but you’re going to need lots of water and some light snacks if you want to conquer the challenging trails of Arizona successfully. A two- or three-liter hydration pack should be good. A biking backpack will help you carry your supplies easily while focusing on the trail at the same time.
Don’t waste your time getting lost in Arizona so, don’t risk it and be prepared with a map or guide. You can download mobile apps to make navigation easier and more accessible especially when you’re already on the trails. First-time bikers in Arizona should go with groups as well to avoid losing their way.

Where to Go Mountain Biking in Arizona
McDowell Mountain Park is considered Phoenix’s best beginner-friendly mountain bike network, and XC riders love it. There are more than 50 miles of trail, with the majority of those miles being easy-ride terrains. The trail is hard-packed and hilly, with stunning views of the McDowell Mountain as well as the cactus-covered desert.
There are plenty of iconic trails to choose from on South Mountain so there is something for everyone here. Most of the trails, however, are not exactly ‘beginner-friendly’ like the National trail. Desert Classic is the only true rookie-friendly trail at South Mountain. It’s a 9-mile one-way track at the foot of the mountain that’s perfect for all kinds of riders.
The popular Hiline Trail is rated as an expert-level mountain bike trail in Arizona. It is ideal to start your ride from the Village of Oak Creekside and finish at the Baldwin Trail loop. Expect some exposure and ledgy terrains on your way up while steep and loose areas are common on the descent trail, so most bikers choose to hike at this point.
You’re all set for your best mountain biking experience in Arizona yet! With the must-haves listed above inside your bag, and the must-try trails in your trip itinerary, we’re confident you’ll have the best time in Arizona, and you’ll come home with even more love for the sport than ever before.
