Tips for staying warm while mountain biking in the cold weather
Trails to enjoy in the winter.
A little snow on a trail can change the level of difficulty that trail presents. If you have a challenging trail you enjoy in the warmer weather, it may not be suitable once there’s snow on the ground. Seeking out bike trails designed for winter is ideal, especially if you are new to mountain biking.
Bike parks are great; they have paved bike trails but once covered in snow, they become more challenging and fun.
Gear for mountain biking in cold weather
Carrier bag
Just like in the summer, it is best to be as prepared as possible. Filling your carrier bag with extra clothes, gloves, and socks is a good idea. Don’t forget to throw in some food and water. Even though it is cold, you need to maintain your hydration.
If you can put your extra clothes in a dry bag, that would be best, just in case your bag gets wet from rain, snow, or you wipe out in a snowbank. Your backup layers will still be dry.
Base layer
Starting with a good base layer of clothing made up of synthetic material or merino wool will help to keep you warm and help to wick away moisture from your skin.
You don’t want to wear a material that feels too constricting but also not so loose that it doesn’t fit nicely under other pieces of clothing.
Jacket
This might seem obvious, but it is a necessity for winter riding. Investing in a good quality waterproof jacket with breathable material is well worth it. Spending a little more upfront for a coat that will keep you warm for years is a small sacrifice. A jacket that has a hood is an excellent idea, so when you stop for a break to flip the hood on, make sure it stays back out of the way while you’re riding or can be tucked easily into the jacket itself.
Neck tube
Neck tubes are made from breathable materials and are great for keeping your neck warm. You can pull them up to keep your chin warm or wear them underneath your bike helmet to keep your head and ears warm.
Gloves
Wearing your everyday winter gloves will not work when mountain biking this winter. Thick and bulky gloves won’t let you properly grip and manure the handlebars. You can buy riding gloves that are designed for winter riding. It is ideal to buy two pairs just in case one pair gets wet; you aren’t stuck with cold and wet gloves for the rest of your ride.
Leggings
Water-resistant leggings are a must for winter riding. They are thin enough to give you the range of motion needed while riding and will stay dry even if it is raining or snowing.
Socks
You should invest in a few pairs of waterproof socks for your winter riding excursions. You will want your socks to be as comfy as possible, dry, and warm. Having lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking socks will make a huge difference in how comfortable you are while riding. Make sure to throw an extra pair in your carrier bag as backup, just in case.

Shoe covers
If you are riding in freezing weather or lots of snow, wearing shoe covers is a good idea. Nothing will stop your trip faster than having cold feet. Shoe covers, in addition to your waterproof socks and shoes, will give an extra layer of protection and warmth.
Toe warmers
You can buy toe warmers that perfectly fit your socks and inside your shoes to provide warmth to your toes. They are thin enough not to use up too much space and make your shoes uncomfortable, yet thick enough to insulate your toe and keep them cozy.
Face mask
A face mask designed for mountain biking will keep your face warm, prevent frostbite, and keep your neck warm while being easy to breathe. These masks are usually made from neoprene and are designed to fit most people.
Bike lights
Since the sun tends to set much earlier during the colder months having lights on your bike is a must. Being visible for other drivers to see you, and if you plan to drive on the road, people driving cars must also see you.
Conclusion
Mountain biking is not only possible during the colder months, but with the right gear can be a good time.
Don’t forget to dry out your gear when you get home. Keeping it in good working order means you won’t have to keep buying the same things and can spend a little more on the higher quality items to enjoy.
