How to Choose the Right Mountain Bike Competition for You

Downhill / Freeride: Big drops, high speed, big air (e.g., Rampage, Joyride).

Regional Series: Local, fun, often less intense (good for beginners).

Assess Your Skill & Gear

Make sure you have the right bike setup; not all events suit a casual hardtail.

Safety gear matters, especially in downhill/freeride events.

Training for the specific demands (terrain, distance, altitude) pays off.

Consider the Location & Logistics

Big international events may require travel, entry fees, and logistics.

Regional races are great for exploring your local trail community.

Some events are spectator-friendly if you just want to watch.

The starting line of your next race may be the gateway to your greatest ride yet.

On Thursday, October 10th, the world’s leading female mountain bike athletes will compete for the first time in the stunning red desert of Southwest Utah, aiming to make history. The top male freeriders will return on Saturday, October 12th, tackling some of the most challenging terrain in the world as they vie for the top podium spot, bragging rights, and the coveted Red Bull Rampage trophy.

Watch the women’s broadcast on Thursday, October 10th at 9:00 pm ET/6:00 pm PT on ESPN+, Red Bull TV, and Red Bull Bike’s YouTube channel.

Watch the men’s broadcast on Saturday, October 12th at 12:00 pm ET/9:00 am PT on ESPN+.

The inaugural Red Bull Rampage took place in 2001 in Virgin, Utah. Inspired by the natural terrain of the American West and the emerging freeride culture in mountain biking, the event was designed to push the boundaries of what riders could achieve on their bikes. The location, with its rugged cliffs and varied topography, provided an ideal backdrop for this new style of mountain biking, allowing riders to express their creativity while testing their limits.

The first Rampage featured a unique format, allowing riders to build their lines down the mountain. This approach encouraged innovation and showcased the athletes’ ability to navigate and manipulate the terrain creatively. The event was initially a relatively small gathering, but it quickly gained traction as spectators and participants recognized the spectacle of extreme mountain biking.

Growth and Popularity

Following the success of the first Rampage, the event quickly grew in popularity. The unique combination of big air, technical riding, and breathtaking scenery attracted top talent from around the globe. Riders like Kyle Strait, Darren Berrecloth, and Brian Lopes became household names, captivating fans with jaw-dropping tricks and daring descents.

In 2004, the Rampage became an official competition, introducing a judging system that evaluated riders based on difficulty, style, and overall execution. This move elevated the event’s status, making it a must-see for mountain biking enthusiasts and cementing its reputation as the pinnacle of freeride competition.

The Move to New Locations

As the event’s popularity grew, the Red Bull Rampage venue changed to accommodate larger audiences and provide new challenges for riders. After several years in Virgin, the event moved to the iconic landscape of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. The new location offered a different terrain, allowing even more creativity in line construction.

In 2015, the Rampage took place in a unique format that allowed fans to vote for their favorite riders, giving them a sense of participation and engagement in the competition. This innovative approach further solidified the event’s status as a fan-favorite and expanded its reach within the mountain biking community.

Evolution of the Event

Over the years, the Red Bull Rampage has evolved to include various formats and challenges. The event has introduced new features, such as large jumps, technical drops, and intricate lines that push the limits of what riders can do on their bikes. The inclusion of women’s competitions began in 2014, showcasing the incredible talent of female mountain bikers and expanding the event’s inclusivity.

The Rampage has also embraced technology, utilizing advanced filming techniques and live broadcasts to bring the event to a global audience. This has allowed fans worldwide to witness the thrills and spills of the competition in real time, making it one of the most-watched events in mountain biking.

The Cultural Impact

The Red Bull Rampage has had a profound impact on the mountain biking culture, inspiring a new generation of riders and pushing the limits of the sport. It has become a platform for creativity, showcasing technical skill and artistry inline design and trick execution. The event has played a significant role in elevating freeride mountain biking to a recognized sport, influencing the competitive landscape and the design of mountain bikes.

Bike to Work Week, an annual event celebrated worldwide, is once again upon us from May 13th to May 19th, 2024. This week-long celebration is a testament to the growing movement towards sustainable transportation and a healthier lifestyle. Commuters, environmentalists, and biking enthusiasts alike eagerly anticipate this event, seizing the opportunity to ditch their cars and opt for pedal power.

Promoting Sustainable Transportation

The primary goal of Bike to Work Week is to promote sustainable transportation alternatives and reduce reliance on cars. With concerns about climate change and air pollution on the rise, the need for eco-friendly commuting options has never been more urgent. Biking to work not only reduces carbon emissions but also alleviates traffic congestion and promotes cleaner air in urban areas.

Health Benefits of Biking

Beyond its environmental advantages, biking offers a plethora of health benefits. Regular cycling contributes to improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength and flexibility, and enhanced mental well-being. By incorporating biking into their daily routines, individuals can reap these health rewards while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint.

Community Engagement and Advocacy

Bike to Work Week is more than just a celebration; it’s a platform for community engagement and advocacy. Local governments, environmental organizations, and cycling enthusiasts collaborate to organize events such as group rides, bike maintenance workshops, and commuter challenges. These initiatives not only raise awareness about the benefits of biking but also foster a sense of camaraderie among participants.

Overcoming Challenges

While Bike to Work Week encourages individuals to embrace biking as a viable commuting option, it also acknowledges the challenges associated with cycling in urban environments. Issues such as inadequate bike infrastructure, safety concerns, and inclement weather can deter potential cyclists. As part of the advocacy efforts, organizers strive to address these challenges by advocating for improved bike lanes, promoting safety education, and providing resources for all-weather cycling.

Embracing a Culture of Cycling

Bike to Work Week serves as a catalyst for cultivating a culture of cycling within communities. By celebrating biking as a practical and enjoyable mode of transportation, organizers hope to inspire long-term behavior change. Beyond the designated week, the aim is to encourage individuals to incorporate biking into their daily lives, whether it’s commuting to work, running errands, or simply enjoying leisure rides.

The Power of Collective Action

At its core, Bike to Work Week exemplifies the power of collective action in addressing pressing environmental and health challenges. By mobilizing communities to embrace biking, individuals can contribute to meaningful change on both local and global scales. Whether it’s reducing carbon emissions, improving public health, or fostering a sense of community, every pedal stroke during Bike to Work Week brings us one step closer to a more sustainable future.

As Bike to Work Week approaches, cyclists of all backgrounds are encouraged to participate, advocate, and celebrate the transformative potential of pedal power. Whether you’re a seasoned commuter or a novice cyclist, join the movement and pedal towards a greener, healthier, and more vibrant future.

The Racing Collective of the United Kingdom is a not-for-profit bikepacking club dedicated to self-supported racing. Inspired by renowned events like the Transcontinental and the Tour Divide, this passionate collective has crafted a series of unique trials across the UK that embody the spirit of self-sufficiency, all achievable within a single weekend.

Beyond the Trails: A Not-for-Profit Bikepacking Club

Steering clear of the beaten path in their riding and pursuit of sustainable living, The Racing Collective aims to go beyond the conventional ‘Leave No Trace’ principle. They aim to leave the world better than they found it by adopting the ultra-cyclist mindset of self-support, self-actualization, and self-motivation. They believe in extending these principles to all aspects of life, not just during rides and wild camping. By taking the less-traveled route, rejecting the status quo, and driving change, they demonstrate a demand for sustainable solutions.

The collective’s journey began when the founding members crossed paths during the #ClimateKilometre ride from London to Paris for the UN climate talks in December 2015. Inspired by the resilience of climate scientists Erlend Knudsen and Daniel Price, who trekked and cycled from the North and South Poles to COP21 in Paris, The Racing Collective realized that the future lies in their own hands—if they have the will to shape it.

Their values echo those expressed by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of ‘Patagonia,’ in his book ‘Let My People Go Surfing.’ Deep appreciation for the environment, a solid motivation to address the environmental crisis, a profound love for nature, skepticism toward authority, a fondness for challenging human-powered sports that require skill, a disdain for motorized activities, a penchant for offbeat and self-deprecating humor, a taste for a real adventure that pushes boundaries, and a belief that less is more.

Their Mission

Their mission is two-fold. First, they aim to rewild themselves through self-sufficiency, reclaiming a sense of wildness tamed by modern life. They seek routes that awaken a feeling of vitality, freedom, and untamed spirit, allowing riders to break free from the monotony of organized entertainment and truly come alive.

Secondly, The Racing Collective strives to prepare riders for the challenges that lie ahead, particularly for those aspiring to conquer the Transcontinental Race (TCR). They emphasize that more than simply accumulating miles is needed to finish the TCR successfully. Proficiency in route planning, navigation, and night riding is crucial. The Trans trials are designed to allow riders to practice these skills, with increasing distances over time, creating milestones within their TCR training plans.

Creating Wilderness

Additionally, The Racing Collective is committed to creating “wilderness” by supporting rewilding projects. They believe in setting ambitious goals that initially seem unattainable, recognizing that failure is integral to pursuing lofty ambitions. Their long-term objective is to establish a series of rewilding initiatives. By acquiring land and restoring natural forests and wildlife, they hope to provide future generations with authentic wilderness experiences akin to Awaroa Beach in New Zealand and The Great Smoky Mountains in the United States. They establish a Feral Fund, where members and adventure-seeking organizations contribute to achieve this. The fund will finance short films and written articles to support crowdfunding campaigns. Meanwhile, members are encouraged to join Trees for Life and participate in tree-planting activities throughout the planting season.

Join the Journey

If all of this interests you, prepare to rewild yourself, embrace the challenges ahead, and become part of The Racing Collective—a community united by a shared love for cycling, wilderness, and the pursuit of extraordinary experiences.

In the heart of Central America lies an adventure that has captured the imagination of mountain bikers worldwide. La Ruta, possibly the world’s first-ever mountain bike stage race, takes participants on a thrilling journey across Costa Rica, spanning from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast in just three days.

Hundreds of elite mountain bikers and endurance racers from around the world gather in Central America yearly to test their limits in this remarkable test of distance, geography, climate, and culture. There is no leisurely ride on the beach when it comes to La Ruta, the only bike race in the world that traverses the American landmass from coast to coast.

Throughout its 161-mile route, participants face the challenge of crossing five mountain ranges, accumulating a staggering 29,000 feet of elevation gain. Its unforgiving terrain mirrors the trails once trodden by Spanish conquistadores led by Juan De Cavallón, who took two decades to cross Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Caribbean. Today, intrepid adventurers racing on mountain bikes complete this epic journey in just three days.

La Ruta is Costa Rica’s premier mountain bike race and stands as one of the most demanding athletic events on the planet. As the original multi-day fat-tire stage race, La Ruta is the “Grandfather” that inspired the now-global genre, earning deep respect and adoration from participants. It attracts top-notch riders and endurance enthusiasts seeking to challenge themselves in this unparalleled odyssey of distance, geography, climate, and culture. The race’s unique appeal lies in combining extraordinary physical demands with breathtaking natural surroundings.

Costa Rica itself serves as the perfect backdrop for this remarkable event. National Geographic has dubbed it “the most biodiverse place on the planet,” as it houses 5% of the Earth’s species on a mere 0.01% of its land mass. As La Ruta riders traverse nine out of twelve distinct microclimates within the country, they are treated to a sensory feast, encountering many birds, plants, and animals.

The route winds through tropical rainforests, ascends towering 12,000-foot volcanoes, weaves through banana plantations and quaint farm towns, and immerses riders in a stunning variety of landscapes. Along the way, participants experience the whims of the weather, being drenched in the rain one moment and frozen at high elevations the next. The terrain challenges riders on every imaginable riding surface, including singletrack trails, fire roads, gravel, hard-packed dirt, pavement, thigh-deep mud, sand, and even volcano ash. The route demands endless exertion, with grueling climbs, hike-a-bikes, and exhilarating descents through rainforests, steamy jungles, majestic volcanoes, breezy coastlines, suspended bridges, and deep river gorges.

Novice mountain bikers beware; La Ruta is not for you. Even seasoned professionals often recount their experiences with disbelief and awe. The event tests one’s riding abilities, physical endurance, mental fortitude, and durability. In the face of this joyful adversity, participants discover hidden depths within themselves and embark on a personal growth journey. La Ruta transcends the label of a mere “race” and becomes an unforgettable experience of self-discovery.

Top Places to Go Mountain Biking in Maui

When planning your mountain biking route in Maui, don’t forget these top go-to places:

1. Makawao Forest Reserve – Kahakapao Trails

The Makawao Forest Reserve – Kahakapao Trails is a favorite mountain biking destination in Maui. The place boasts wonderful new trails and features buried away in the gorgeous forest reserve thanks to the Maui Mountain Bike Coalition and IMBA. The riding ranges from flowing burled-out single track to switchback-filled glades, all while being protected from the sun by a forest cover.

2. Poli Poli Springs in Kula Reserve

Poli Poli Springs, located above Kula, offers a variety of hiking, bicycling, and hunting routes. The Mamane trail, which drops over 800 feet over 1.8 miles from the start on Skyline to its end on Waipoli Road, is the most popular of all. The trail begins above the tree line and glides smoothly and quickly, progressing into low scrub and tree covers where the trail becomes increasingly tricky.

3. Skyline Trail

Also known as the Haleakala Summit, Skyline Trail is an incredible MTB adventure. It’s a terrific opportunity to view the island and ride from the summit at 10,023 feet. In Haleakala’s volcano crater, you’ll be able to see juvenile cinder cones and admire the masterpiece of colors that only nature can create. As you descend, the trail will take you off-road, giving you majestic views of the Big Island.
